How do I make a conference poster in Latex?

There's a really neat tex source which you could modify for your own use here.

The default number of columns is 5. You can change this by setting the definition of the environment variable '\colwidth' in the header to little less than (1/(number of columns)).

"Words of wisdom on a fraught topic" at Glasgow. Includes a nice perl script to convert a0 postscript to an a4 sized postscript! (I'm pretty sure there's a way to modify if for letter sized paper...)
